Five Years on the List, but What Really Matters

So, it’s official! This is the 5th year in a row that my name shows up on the list of the world’s top 2% scientists. Sounds fancy, right? Honestly, though, I’ve never seen it as a badge of honor or some kind of career trophy. For me, it’s more like a little nudge, a reminder to keep doing what I love most: research, analysis, and following my curiosity wherever it takes me.

I still remember how it all started. Back in my student days, I could spend hours playing with data, running numbers, and trying to spot patterns. It wasn’t about grades or recognition, I just genuinely enjoyed the process. At some point, I started wondering: could my small and simple work ever be good enough to make it into a top-tier journal?

That curiosity kept me going. Not because I wanted to build an academic career from assistant professor to full professor (I’ve never really chased titles), but because I wanted to test myself. Could I take an idea, polish it, and put it out into the world? No tricks, no shortcuts, no manipulation—just pure trial and error. Sometimes the papers got accepted, sometimes they didn’t. But every rejection and every revision taught me something new, and honestly, that’s been the most rewarding part of the journey.

This year feels a little more special because I’m now with NUS. Being surrounded by such a vibrant mix of colleagues and students is energizing; it pushes me to stay curious, to keep exploring, and to enjoy the process even more.

So yeah, the “top 2%” list is nice, but it’s not the destination. For me, it’s just another little reminder: keep asking questions, keep learning, and keep enjoying the ride. Because at the end of the day, that love for discovery—that’s the real reward.
