Archive 2019 – PhD Mission Accomplished

This year is the last stage of my 5-year PhD study in Chulalongkorn University Thailand. The University that teaches me so many lessons about the advanced development of nursing knowledge as well as about the life.

Joko Gunawan, a young man with full of dreams, a robot, a party man, a player, a man with full of fire (add others..), is just a representative of millennial generation from Belitung Island that would like to get the highest degree as soon as possible. But, as the matter of fact, being a PhD is not about the matter of time, but it’s rather about the matter of being mature (I will talk about this in one of my articles for 2020).

I just shifted my role from PhD Candidate to PhD. And now I am facing the real world, the world of opportunities and threats.

This archive I made for the pleasure of imagination in a piece of memories for the future.

On January till March, I was still at Gainesville Florida. The place I visited to expand networking and learn new knowledge, specifically about mixed methods research and nursing informatics.

On 15 February, Idid the presentation of our app at Rita Kobb Nursing Informatics Symposium. It’s kind of a new thing for me to present such as an app in front of Americans. Luckily, the environment was so great with excellent feedbacks from the audiences.

The conclusion of activities in the United States can be seen below:

On 15 March, I flew back to Bangkok to accomplish my first mission, completing my PhD. This time I was dealing with five chapters and the concepts of my study with my supervisor. Also, we have to finish our project that was started in 2017. It means I need to finish my dissertation and the projects.

On May, the team and I visited Vietnam again for another data collection.

On June 28, it’s the final defense of my dissertation. There is nothing I could say, within 5 years of learning with the same topic, definitely I am the one who masters it as my supervisor said “you are the one who only knows better of your research”. However, although it’s true, but the examiners are much smarter than me, with beautiful questions and explanations which all make sense. That’s the moment you realize that you need multiple perspectives to strengthen your concept. 🙂 Luckily, I passed it!

On August, while waiting for the graduation ceremony, I was invited to attend workshop for publication as a speaker at Faculty of Nursing, University of Sumatera Utara. What a great opportunity!

October 3rd, I was so excited because my parents came to Bangkok to join. They would never come to Bangkok if I was not graduated. Can you imagine that pressure? Haha.

After one week, I was flying back to Indonesia to meet my family and Mahankar friends, and of course doing the project.

On October 28, my supervisor came to visit Belitong again. She loves Belitong and could not stop swimming.

On 28-31 October I was invited to give a motivation talk in senior high schools at my hometown

What I am doing at the moment is working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Chulalongkorn University until August 2020. I am really grateful for all I have. Thanks to God, my family, supervisors, and those who help me in my life journey.

Hope we always in a good health and happiness! Although it sounds weird, as the life is not always be good, but at least we can still breath until today. Alhumdulillah!

May peace be upon us! All the best, brothers and sisters!

Happy New Year 2020!

Dr. Joko Gunawan
